Ned Ambler graduated from New York University Tisch School of the Arts in '94 with a BA in Film and Television. He enjoyed five years as a highly influential casting director in the fashion industry, handpicking talent for advertising campaigns such as Calvin Klein (CK, CK1, CK Be, CK Jeans, CK Kakki, CK Boxers), The Gap, Levis, Versace, Jil Sander, Valentino, and Dolce & Gabbana; fashion editorial for magazines such as Vogue, Italian Vogue, L’Uomo Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, W, Interview, Details, and The Face; and also for runway shows such as Calvin Klein, Matsuda, Comme de Garcon, Joop, Diesel, Jil Sander, and Marc Jacobs.
His success in the fashion industry helped him self-fund numerous independent shorts and feature films which have appeared in festivals around the world including NYC MIX Festival – Innovations Feature Series, San Francisco MIX Festival, The New Festival NYC, Euro Underground Film Festival (Poland, London, Paris, India, Thailand), Chicago Underground Film + Video Festival, Spa Film Showcase, Copenhagen Film + Video Festival, Molnbo Film Festival (Sweden), as well as regular screenings at Anthology Film Archives and feature programs at Millennium Film Workshop in NYC, and also at galleries such as American Fine Arts and Deitch Projects. His work caught the eye of an MTV producer and he directed several sets of commercial spots for the network, which led to him being signed with Public Domain, a bi-coastal commercial production house.
After his portrait photography of fellow artists appeared in group and solo exhibitions at Life and the Rupert Goldsworthy Gallery, Interview Magazine took notice and Ned became a contributing photographer for the magazine, shooting celebrity portraits and fashion. All the while he continued his long-standing relationship of shooting recording artist pals Princess Superstar, Kembra Pfahler, and Theo Kogan.
Ned has recently begun a series of Sharpie Marker drawings and hopes to have a show of them soon.
